To learn how to clean an AC condenser unit or coil, you first need to know what it is.

An outdoor condenser coil can easily become very dirty, especially if you live in dry environments with lots of dirt, debris, and foliage. One of the easiest ways to keep your AC condenser clean is to keep the area around it clean.

For example, make sure to trim back foliage around your unit at least two feet to keep a healthy airflow.

But for step-by-step instructions, consider the following.

How to Clean an AC Condenser Coil Step-by-Step

Step 1. Turn off the power.

Make sure all power an electricity running into the condenser is completely shut off. This is a health hazard and should be taken seriously.

Step 2. Remove the screws.

Use a cordless drill or screwdriver with a socket to carefully remove all screws. Make sure you have something nearby to place them in to avoid losing them.

Step 3. Remove panels.

Starting with the back side of the unit, remove the panels one by one. Be careful not to damage the condenser fins.

As you remove the panels, keep them in the same order you removed them for easier re-installation.

Step 4. Clean the fins

Use a soft-bristle brush an a hose with a spray nozzle to completely remove any dirt and debris from the fins.

Step 5. Put everything back together.

Install the panels in the reverse order that you removed them. Make sure you use your screwdriver, and leave the screws somewhat loose until you have all panels fit in correctly.

Tighten your screws and you’re done!
